Simply put, dreams are like a hard disk defragment for your brain. This can take many forms. Usually it is your brain "making sense of the things you see, hear and experience throughout your waking life. Sometimes, you may experience a recurring dream. This is usually linked to some form of emotion you experience subconsciously or otherwise - be it anxiety, glee etc. Some other recurring dreams may also be memories unlocked due to the constant shifting of information whilst you sleep.

This shifting of memories and gathered information is necessary as your brain needs to shift information to and from the various levels of memory, ie from short term to long term. It is also during dreams that your brain may "discard" certain memories.

No-one knows for sure. Psychological research suggests it's the brain organising and filing away the emotions and events of the day into long-term memory. Dreams never seem to be exact - they are very abstract, but often you can relate them to events or feelings that you have in your life at the time of the dream.
PS - don't believe any of that dream analysis rubbish (what dreams mean) - dreams are very individual and unique.

Dear cassia_abg:
According to Jung( a Swiss pschychoanalysit of the last century)every dream starts by an exposition. You tell every dream by saying :I was in such a place...,I was in such a city.....,I saw my father in the PARK.
Also dreams of some people reflect what will happen in the future. The most famous one is the dream of an ancient Egyptian ruler which was intepreted by Joseph( Yusuf in Arabic). This saved the middle East from a big famine.
If the dream is bad do not tell it to anybody. If it is good dessiminate it widely!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dreams are glimpses into the portals of other spaces, they make real that which we can't imagine. The human brain is an unexplored universe and it's potential. like space, is without limitations. One can learn to control ones dreams and when that happens, you enter the parallel spaces that surround us all. I've written a book about my adventures with Boo and his friends, I will be publishing it on a blog space soon. If you read it you will understand what dreams are for.

Well, dreams are a basis of our subconcious, some things that we are aware about and things that
we may of just thought about. the brain does not stop functioning until its wake period around 4 am in the morning, this is when we are asleep deeply. this is more often or not the time that we dream more intensly, therefor, the brain is not able to control what we are thinking about. it is more a physchological thing more than anything else. hope this helps

Dreams happen when you are in Rapid Eye Movement sleep. They consolidate what you have learned during the day, and try to make sense of it.
