During the day, radio reception in my car is great but at night, it's horrible. It seems like all the English stations got taken over by Mexican stations cause all I hear is mariachi music. The stuff I want to hear are barely audible in the background.

This is rural area, btw.

Because radio waves bounce off the upper atmosphere better at night, AM stations have to power down at dusk so they don't broadcast outside their designated range. Mexico, as in everything else, doesn't give a rat's *** about conventions and decency so they leave theirs on full power all night. As far north as Kansas, you can pick up Mexican radio at night which drowns out the local station down the street.

That's right, even Mexican radio is an illegal immigrant.

It,s an FCC regulation I believe.Certain radio stations are required to alter their signal after sundown is my understanding.I heard a radio personality talk about it one time but I am certainly no expert on the matter.I live in north central Illinois and WLS-AM is a big station here and I have been on the road before and it comes in clearly during the day but at just about dusk it suddenly fades away until the next morning.

Something having to do with the radio waves changing when the sun goes down.
