We've spent about $500 in the past two months on our dog, Lizzie. $200+ one time & 300 to have her teeth cleaned.

She needed her teeth cleaned because her gum were infected & they would have gotten worse if we didn't get it done for her.

Over $4,000 my Westie had a broken pelvis. And believe it or not that was a deal! That kind of orthopedic surgery can't be done just anywhere. And I love the Vets who took such wonderful care of her. At first my husband and I were at odds on the financial aspect of spending that kind of money, but I told him , we have to because she is like one of my children and he agreed . Now she is almost fully recovered and she is the sunshine of my life!

$2,700 on a hip replacement year ago. Well worth it and would do it again!!!!!!

Man, who is the psycho who is so against teeth cleaning????? What they did in the olden days, was let the dogs teeth rot out and have mouths that were so bacteria ridden that they suffered kidney failure or heart conditions from the bacteria!!!!!!!!! I guess you have never seen a dog with teeth so rotten that when you went to do the dental the tooth just disintegrated!!!!! The small is enough to make you puke and often there is pus where the root should be!!! I guess not all people are concerned about the health of their pet!!!!

At least Lizzie sounds well loved and well cared for!!!!!!!

And a teeth cleaning on a dog or cat is not any more painful than it is for a person!!! The tools are almost identical!!!!!!!!

People, I have been a vet tech for 17 years and done probably 400 dentals, and have never seen ONE that wasn't necessary!!! Most were so bad that the dog/cat ended up with way fewer teeth than they started with. There are many breeds that are just predisposed to bad teeth. Collies and Shelties are 2 of those such breeds. Due to the unnatural shape of the muzzle, the food collects near the back teeth and sits there. People may not notice until it is too late and the teeth are covered in tarter. I have seen it in well cared for Collies that were fed a very good diet!!!! Once the teeth are covered with tarter, the gums can become inflammed and start receeding. Many of the toy breeds have the SAME problem, they do not chew nayurally and even with good quality dry, they can need a teeth cleaning down the road. All the pug faced dogs can have a problem too. And Siamese cats are prone to horrid mouths!!!!!!!!!!!!
Give people a break. If they want to ge the pets teeth cleaned, more power to them. Since you think it is just a scam, you may not if suggested, and maybe your pet will lose teeth. That is your choice, but don't make other people feel bad because they are doing what they feel is good for their pet!!!!

I think it was $700.00 when our Australian shepherd first became ill and was hospitalized in intensive care for about three days. That was for tests and special diet. He had difficulty eating but was sick to his stomach all the time. It turned out that he had throat cancer and he continued to waste away until I had to have him put down. He was such a sad dog at the end, but he was courageous and uncomplaining throughout. His name was Goliath.

I must add to a comment above. Today, with a proper diet for your dog, if you use a major brand dog feed and not table scraps, it is unnecessary to have a dog's teeth cleaned. Dry foods are particularly good for this. My stepdaughter is now a veterinarian and in her studies they are taught how to try to clean teeth, etc. to make extra money; though I doubt she does this unnecessarily in her practice. Consumer Reports some time ago noted this as one thing vets do to pad their bills. I'm sure there are times when a dog's teeth may need to be cleaned, especially if its diet is poor.

We had to have emergency surgery done on one of our dogs when she actually *ate* chunks of a nylabone. (So much for being indestructible... No more nylabones here.) They perforated her intestine and got stuck...

That ordeal, including X-rays, ultrasounds, and everything else, cost us just about $2700. Didn't even flinch. It's *always* worth the money.

I just spent $400 at the vet this last week on puppy X-rays, teeth-cleaning, and a couple of extractions. It goes along with having a dog, or four of them, as I do.

I'm not even going to tell you what I spend at the vet for my English Bulldog in a year's time... ;)

what the heck are you falling for the " HAVE HER TEETH CLEANED " line? WHat a crock of crap...I am a TRUE animal lover, I mean when I see worms drying up on the driveway after a rain storm & they can't get back to the grass, I have to save them....but anyway....I have a dog , 4 cats, 2 rabbits & a guinea pig & ALWAYSSSSSSSSSS say "NO" to the teeth cleaning CRAP......what did they do in the olden days? Dogs didn't get their teeth cleaned.....sheeshhhhhhhh....you just WASTED THAT MONEY!! sorry... :) Let your dog live her life without PAINFUL teeth cleaning, (which I heard is true)...& without wasting your money....she will be fine...LET HER BE A DOG!!

I'm a huge animal lover and unfortunately this has led to a ton of financial difficulties for me! I have three dogs and two cats (all of which live indoors) that have cost me over $800 in the last two months due to their annual shots, as well as unexpected bills due to my pug having her eye scratched by the cat, my black lab having a skin infection, my bulldog having an allergic reaction to his collar, and my other cat having a horrendous ear infection!

On top of all this, I'm unable to turn away animals and have a slew of stray cats taking home in my garage. I don't want to enforce the overproduction of animals, so taking them to have them fixed has cost me over $100 at a low-cost animal clinic! The worst was when I took one of the newly born stray kittens to a walk-in animal emergency clinic for what they claimed was a general illness she was born with. I paid $330 before they took her in (they required payment beforehand, what a surprise) and then turned around five hours later and called me with the news she had died. Not only did I have to deal with losing the kitten, but also had to deal with paying over $300 (nonrefundable) for a stray kitten that wasn't even my own personal indoor pet.

So, I've spent well over $1000 in a few months time. It's hard and sometimes you want to give up, but I know I'll never be able to turn away a helpless, innocent animal for any reason. If I need to continue to scrape by to make ends meet just to save a few animals' lives, I'll do it :)

300.00 for teeth i am glad u love Lissie so much but wal-mart has these wonderful bones that help keep the plaque from building up. plus almost all dollar store bones do this too. but since it is done just keep getting the bones it will keep u from spending more $ the next time.by the way ,where do u live,do u go to the same vet that Paris Hilton goes? if my vet were to quote my that price i would have high tailed me & my dog right out of the office!!!!

not that much. My dog is worth my life though I would take out a loan if needed to. honestly. I believe my fiance would do the same thing. Every time our dog so much as wimpers too many times he says mabye you need to take her to the vet. She cries when she feels bad, like a baby.

They do have pet insurance that can lower that cost. Can get it at petsmart i believe.

Don't listen to the one below me. teeth cleaning is not painful at all. just like a human. just a little anesthesia for no squirming. I performed the procedure before to on dogs.

reading all this is so sweet. I guess i never realized there were so many people who loved there pets so much.

I went to the Vet a few years ago. Saw the Phillies play the Astros. We bought a few beers and hot dogs. Including the tickets, we spent about $100.

I believe the most I spent was $2,000 because I av 3 dogs and one had a back injury but she's better now! But it does cost quite a bit with 3 dogs though, but I'm filthy rich so I don't mind the price!
