Yay! I'm so happy that I know this one!

Here it is: The problem with your sister (in-law) giving the two of you a blender is that blenders are considered a "cheap gift". Choosing to give you a gift that cost (let's be honest) FAR less than what would be customary for a family member to give you could be construed as a slap in the face.

As an example, when my brother got married, the total I spent on gifts was about $300. You can get a brand-name blender these days for about $20 bucks.

Reading "racism" into the gift may or may not be a fair assumption. It could be a matter of miserliness or just of wedding etiquette ignorance. Use the blender to mix your wife a pitcher of margaritas and have a laugh about it.

There has to be more to this story...

Since the blender was for the both of you, I see no reason for your wife to be offended. I don't even see why she would be offended if it was for her.

There is nothing wrong with giving a blender to a Black person. This has nothing to do with race. You might want to ask your wife to explain why she is offended. I'm wondering whether something happen between her and your sister-in-law....

I don't think a blender would be a race thing.
The only one to answer this is your wife.
Now if it was a gift card to KFC. Or a watermelon. Yes it could be taken as a race thing.

Have you tried asking your wife why she got offended by it?

The only thing that comes to mind is that she might have taken it as some sort of a reference to your biracial marriage and a hint about that being bad. Is that possible?

I don't know if this gift was meant that way, but maybe she took it like that and got offended. I don't see any other possible explanation why she'd get offended by this.

It doesn't have anything to do with race... a blender for a Christmas gift... give me a break. Its about your sister-in-law being a thoughtless, cheap beeotch that is pissing off your wife...

I don't if it is a black thing or a personal thing for your wife, but some people do not like to receive utilitarian gifts. They prefer to purchase appliances on their own and receive more personal gifts.

Some people don't like to get kitchen or household stuff for gifts. It's not personal. It's a generic gift. Maybe that is why she doesn't like it.

Your wife is nuts, how is giving someone a blender racist??

Maybe she didn't get offended because of the race thing. Maybe she thought that your sister-in-law was implying that she needs to spend more time in the kitchen. If it was me, and I thought that, I'd be pissed off too.
