It's obvious to me: "P*ss on your house. P*ss on your housecleaning efforts. P*ss on you."
Of course, he may have some subtle message other than this that escapes me.

I always put the seat back down. That way when I come home from work and any of the seats are up then I know there has been another man in my house.
Have you ever sat down on the seat and there was a spider hiding on the under side of it? You could get your butt bit. and then for next few few days you will be scratching your butt every where you go.
Counter question:
Why do women need to use one to two rolls of TP a day?

Well... this generated some comment!!
I would say that he should put the seat and lid down... the women of the house should also put the lid down (I have come across double standards on this one)... Simple - one rule for each of you.
If you are and he is not... then it has to be plain and simple laziness, couple with a "why should I do what you tell me" attitude. I guess the only way to counter this is to find things in reverse that you could not do that bug him... Then use that as a way of getting an adult discussion going about caring for each other, the home you share, etc, etc, and just what that means in terms of you behaviours...
If that does not help, then there are probably more fundamental issues to sort out anyway...

I'll probably be one of the few guys on your side with this not only does putting the seat cover down look nicer but it helps to stop spreading bacteria etc. the problem is most guys dont care, thats always been a pet peave of mine, ive always believed that if you take the time to make your things look good, keep your stuff working proper and just have a general respect for everything you touch you will become a more prosperous person and you will gain better things. the sad fact is most guys dont see how a toilet seat can affect them, but then again these guys dont clean. im proud to say that i clean and cook in my house (im army retired so i dont have to work) so that my wife doesnt have to worry about that after a long day of work, but i still expect her to respect the house and everything within, and you are not wrong to expect the same out of your husband

A woman wants the seat down so they can just go in and sit without any effort. Now they should be greatful that the guy leaves the seat up becuase you know that he had not peed on the seat. If it were left down you would have to wonder, "Did he put it up to go or did he leave it down and got some on the seat?"

With all the crap that we women have to put up with....periods, pms, pregnancy, labor and childbirth, is it really that hard for men to do this one small thing for us? Put the toilet seat back down?
I'm tired of getting up in the middle of the night, leaving the bathroom light off so that I don't disturb HIS sleep, only to sit on a toilet that's covered in his pee and pubes that I'm expected to clean after him...all because he won't put the damn thing back down? And then he wonders why I put the Nair mousse right next to his hair mousse....lol, the cans look exactly the same.

Where is there a law that says the seat must be down? Just because women like it down? Men like it up. Why not leave it up? What is the big deal? If it's up when you go in, put it down.

Unless you have a dog who drinks out of the toilet, who cares if the seat is up? I'd rather have a seat up, than a seat that was down and covered in tinkle sprinkles!!! You just need to look before you sit!!! It's a toilet, not a work of art, it doesn't look "prettier" whether the seat & cover are down or not. You need to choose your battles honey, this is nothing!

How many women are in the house?
When I lived with my mom as a teenager, there were 4 other males in the house and she would say why don't you put the seat down.
I said look, there are 5 males in the house and 1 female, what are the chances of you using it next?

That is a man thing, he just forgets, he is not trying to say anything, and believe me, he is not the only one, When we get together we say " What is the big deal about women and toilet's seats?", give the guy a brake, that's not grounds for a divorce
