Do a web search for your state and Medicaid and Food Stamps. Or maybe on your state's website there's a link to applications directly. If your state doesn't offer applications online, look in the phone book in the blue pages. The application process is long and you'll need lots of documents regarding income and such.
Also try applying for HUD Section 8. The waiting list can be as long as a year. Some states also administer daycare funding, so look into that through your local unemployment agency (you don't have to be unemployed to receive many services).
TANF isn't much, only $150 or so a month for one child, and you have to have sued the father for child support. If you haven't they can do it for you. You just have to have an open case and not be receiving it. There is a one-time payment, but I never figured out how to qualify for that.
Be advised if you have assets of $2000 or more you will not qualify. The government has raised poverty standards, but this cash-on-hand standard has remained the same for many, many years and disqualifies a LOT of people. Liquidate your bank accounts and put the money under the mattress and don't report it.

If you're looking for a handout for the government, true welfare doesn't exist anymore. Contact your local social services department, and you can talk to someone about what you need. You may qualify for food stamps. I don't think welfare payments exist anymore. If you already have medical insurance, you won't qualify for state insurance. But it will all depend on your income.
Also contact your local WIC department (Women, Infants, & Children). They can help you with milk, cheese, cereal, juice for small children under the age of 5, and formula for babies. They give you "checks" that you cash at grocery stores.
Also, contact your child support department if you're not receiving child support payments. They'll help you get a court order for him to make support payments to you if you don't get them already, or they can review the case if you feel the father has had a change of income. Usually cases are up for review after 3 years since the last court order. If there is a court order but you're not receiving the support that you're supposed to, he can be brought into court for contempt.

Go to the department of family services office and ask for a food stamp application and they also should offer some kind of medical assistance for you and your child and if you are having problems paying the cost of child care, some states will help you with that also. You will be assigned a case worker and you will probably have to wait a long time to get in, but your case worker is there to ask any questions you might have and to help you try to get whatever you need. Make sure you take with you your ID and your child's ID and birthcertificate and also a recent paystub.

Ignore the first answer you got! You don't need a father to raise a child, some fathers make life for children hell. You don't say where you come from. In Australia contact Centrelink.
any other countries I'd say start with the Salvation Army or another church group they should point you in the right direction

You have to contact your county assistance offices, like FIA and the like. (Family Independence agency) Your local Health Department should also be able to guide you in the right direction.

you need to contact social services in your state and while you're contacting people, contact the baby's father, take him to court and get child support started, the social services folk can help with that.
