I've had to answer this because a christian compromised and agreed with these people. Atheist are not free thinkers. They choose to live a life in sin. I seem so answers on here where they literally say that they have a right to Sin because sin doesn't exist to them because of the connection to God and Christianity. They didn't read ur question but made accusations and insults which is immoral and proof of their behavior. Some of them on here could not answer ur question and accused you of going to pick a christian for best answer when you posted for atheists. Just wanted defend ur question! These people need much prayer ans also the ones who compromise with sinners. God bless.

Wouldn't everyone be a free thinker,

and no, atheists are still subject to rules of common decency, and I an atheist think abortion is wrong and should be made illegal cause its killing a life, science teaches life starts on day 1,
I don't think government should have gay or straight marriage, just get rid of it all together and let the church's marry, and if people are without a religion they could go to the courthouse and get a piece of paper that says "union"
so im against gay marriage,
what else,
adultery,
nope, im against adultery, think its immorral, don't need god for any of that did I

so, you can go ahead and pick whoever christian said "yep they are godless they suck they don't have morality" as best answer

hopefully one christian will read this and say oh, an atheist can be against abortion and gay marriage and adultery, and he didn't require god

I am not an atheist; however, I know atheists and they are very moral people, not because they believe in God, but because they are humans. The things you stated are not necessarily true regarding atheists. They just can't grasp the concept of a 'superior being' that created the earth and all that is in it. I understand why a person can't believe in a triune God or the Devil because it truly is a mystery. An atheist told me the other day that when they see the works, prejudices and hatred coming from all these so-called Christians, that is confirms their belief there is no god. Christians, you have to live and be a perfect example if you want to save a soul.

Well we do still have morals. The difference is what we believe is morally wrong. I believe adultery is wrong because of my monogamous view, but not in the sense that if we get divorced everything after that is adultery. We don't feel that we can just go around smiting people just because our free will isn't granted by God and therefore not governed by God’s word. We are still participating members of society and are civilized but for reasons unlike being a slave to a fictional character. We are free thinkers in the sense that we aren’t bound by God’s word but don’t forget that we are also civil.

Ahem.

Firstly, all atheists are not necessarily more intelligent than the average Joe...but thanks for perpetuating the myth that Christians are socially retarded, sexist and homophobic.

Secondly, as an atheist and a supporter of women's rights and legalization of same-sex marriage, I can honestly tell you that my lack of organized religion has nothing whatsoever to do with my belief in equality. As an atheist who has many, many devout Christian friends I can also tell you that someone who truly undestood the Christian teachings would favor equality over regurgitating archaic concepts.

Why don't you try a little thinking, then move up to the big leagues of free thinking and questioning society?

Atheists are not free thinkers per se. Atheism is the lack of "theism", there have been found "atheistic" tribes in South America, they simple do not have any personal, interventionist deity. There are dogmatic atheists as well, and freethought is, from my understanding, against dogmas.

"therefore abortion,gay-marriage,adultry,... are okay"
This is a fallacy. Morals have nothing to do with god/divine rules. I do understand that someone who follows a certain religion will try to follow the rules set by such religion, even though, atheistic societies aren't immoral per se. Check Japan. You can reach a moral set of belief by mere logical reasoning, you don't need to dogmatically believe in the golden rule to understand its value.

The best way to set a rule (call it law) is by following moral and ethical logic, that is to say, explanations that are universally accepted. In multicultural societies they try to follow this, saying that "this or that" law is made because "this or that explanation" is usually more acceptable than saying "because the bible says so".

Finally, I'd say that some religions rules are (arguably) immoral by nature, killing someone because he/she changed his beliefs (and your religion tells you to do so) or letting some die because your religion forbids blood transfusion are immoral rules, from my very personal point of view, some might disagree though.

The "rebellion against god" concept makes no sense to me. I'm sure it means nothing to buddhists, taoists and the likes as well, even if they, as myself, have a well defined moral set.

Morality is to do the right thing even if men and gods are giving their back to you.

There doesn't appear to be a question here.

I don't even see much of an argument, other than you seem to think that Aethism = license to do whatever. But you cannot seem to understand that a person can not believe in a higher being and still be bound to morality. You can; it's called reason.

If athiests are "rebelling against God" then, would not God smite them, like he did to everyone BUT Noah and two of every animal?

Just because I don't believe in a higher power doesn't mean that I'm for everything your religion is against. I have my own thoughts, but incidentally I don't have anything against abortion or gay marriage.

Most theists believe that not believing is 'rebellion'. I don't really care. To tell me that is for me to say in a sarcastic tone: "I'm an Atheist. Look everyone, I'm battling it out with the Pope's imaginary friend!"

The thing that people who believe in religion don't understand is that we still abide by the rules of society, and nature. Christianity simply doesn't leave room for the "laws of the jungle" which is why all atheists don't go around sleeping with their sisters and marrying their brothers. It's not natural, I don't care if it's against god or not, it's just not right. We can't just do whatever we feel like, we'd end up in jail or killed by some one we pissed off, we understand that. Just live and let live already, I don't condemn you for believing in something I don't believe in. Love thy neighbor right? Follow your own rules kid.

You use the term 'my opinion' like you actually can think and form one. Huh..what a concept.
If you look for the surveys, you will find that people who claim to be faithful tend to cheat more on tests, get caught in more crime, and fight more with their spouses. Most atheists tend to seek out a purpose in life for themselves, unlike religionists, who have it handed to them sans thinking. The only true Evil in the world is action taken based upon Blind Faith in things like religion, government, economics, and 'the end justifies the means'.
There is one purpose to Life, and one only: To create useful structure in the universe over and above the resources which are consumed. This is the Net Creativity of a species. Even the idea of God points to this: God created everything from nothing. That's the only thing that you really can believe about your God. Everything else you have been taught is the word of men who want you to join them in some way or another, using your unquestioned faith in God, transposed as unquestioned faith in God's 'faithful' appointees.
The rules which came from these appointees usually involve things which make it easier for someone to make money from poor or stupid people ("Do not let them eat of the tree of knowledge, for they will become like us"). The original purpose of religion was to send in missionaries to teach natives not to eat the salesmen who were coming right behind them.
The problem with all the divine rules is that they also come with Jealous God rules, so that you continue to compete with other religions for God's attention and the resources of God's earth, but in the long run (beyond your apocalypses and raptures), true peace and sustainability for the human race will only come from cooperative living based on the intentions of Net Creativity. How many people are consuming, and how many are actually creating something that our grandchildren can use?
