Vodka is a neutral ultra-purified grain spirit.

Absinthe (and Pastis in general) is a liqueur that is made by infusing various herbs into a vegetable-based alcohol, then adding anise or licorice. More alcohol and sweeteners are then added.

Totally different animals.

Absinthe has the distinction of being the only commercially distilled alcohol to be flat-out banned and outlawed. This was due to it's inclusion of the herb wormwood, which has hallucinagenic proerties, but at higher does will just plain kill you by literally rotting out your brain.

Most brands of absinthe are around 30-40% alcohol, but some of the Eastern European varieties are a hair under 90%. Sick.

Oh, the other cool thing about it is that when you mix it with water, it turns milky-white.

Hope that helps.
Cheers.

In addition to the other answers, absinthe is (or at least was for a very long time) illegal to make, distill, or import into the United States. Although Customs irregularly enforces the importation law, it can still be siezed.

Of course, the other difference is the green color of absinthe. Very pretty. Vodka is clear. I had absinthe in NZ, I don't see what the big deal was. I've been far more drunk from Vodka.

Absinthe contains wormwood, a mild hallucinagen. Vodka does not. Then there is the flavor, and the appearance.....as for naddel's comment, lol, that's like saying any telephone not made by Alexander Graham Bell is a fake, lol

The real absinth is from Czech. It contains ingredients of the wormwood plant. Everyone not from Czech is fake.
