The Prince by Machiavelli

You're really going to need an army, and a large one at that. You might have luck emerging as a warloard in a third world nation, but that has inherent disadvantages as you'll probably be weaker than a neighboring military power, but you can certainly try.

It's over-rated though, power is an illusion. You'll live in constant paranoia about losing power and influence.

William was an excellent soldier and to be that in those days you needed to be ruthless. When he invaded England he had to defeat the saxons under Harold but he also had to deal with an anglo-saxon uprising due to his granting of lands to his Norman helpers this he did in 1067, 1069 and 1070 also he had to deal with the rebellion of Hereward the Wake. To achieve this he had to be pretty ruthless and by today's standards may have seemed like a tyrant but this was the politics of the time. On the other hand he did set the administration of law and justice on a firm footing and with the Doomsday book tried to achieve a good system of taxation. I think that seen in the context of his time he was a reasonably good ruler

Grab your ticket and wait in line!

I once thought of a fail proof plan to take over the world and for some odd reason I completely forgot what I was going to do and no longer have any of my plans available even though most of them were in code I believe.

I did so over five years ago and only now am I remembering my past obsessions.
