Use your credit card. You get a better total exchange rate because you're not charged transfer fees, and receipts will show the USD value to help judge if you've been charged the right amount. Only carry enough cash for things like taxis. Besides, it's safer to carry only small amounts of cash. As for what currency to use when you need cash, it's usually local custom as to which is preferred, and I'm not familiar w/ St. Marten. Hopefully someone else can share some local info.

As stated above, use your credit card. We did on most purchases. On others we used USD.

USD sometimes: The exchange rate for Euros from USD is about 1.41, so if you had the chance, use USD, unless its about even.
