Because it is the most successful in bringing people closer to God. Being closer to God results in success. Ergo, the christian nations succeed to a much greater degree than non-christian nations. Other see this success and want to copy it. The smart ones perceive the true source of the success and the implications of that knowledge and convert. They then go on to succeed themselves, not only materially, but spiritually as well.

1st- Christianity is the number 1 religion in the world
2nd- No it is not just a western thing.
Christianity is so well spread because of Europe, true, but during the Age of Colonialism, Europe colonized most of the world from Asia, Africa, South America, North America, and Australia. The only continent left being Europe.
Why did the people accept this religion? Jesus. Here is a man that is poor, he has nothing, yet he dedicates his life towards the people, not the rich but the poor. He heals people, his quotes from the bible are some of the most powerful quotes in anytype of literature. Not only is he a man, but he is a "God" and he is taking care of the people.
The story ends with him giving his life for the people.
So when the Europeans showed them this religion, these people were the people that were poor and weak to their captives. It was easier for them to relate to this person (jesus).
And the famous John 3 16 goes. "whosoever shall believe in him shall not perish but have everlasting life" who can say no to that?

"Most popular" is a poor choice of phrase. How do you measure it? If it cannot be quantified, it cannot be measured. What makes it 'the most popular'?
It is not the fastest gowing... mostly. Roman Catholicism IS one of the fastest growing, but that is for a sneaky reason.
You see, the reason some big religions- Mormonism, Catholicism, Islam, etc. are growing so fast is that they are big enough to benefit from their own member's reproducing.
If you track ONLY converts, and do follow-up studies to ENSURE that the converts actually change, the fastest growing is "no religious affiliation", although Wicca and other neo-Pagan faiths are doing OK (the total numbers involved are still pretty small, however.)
Considering that most branches of most organized religions are shrinking in numbers, I doubt there is a way to prove the statement.
By the way, I AM a Christian!

Unlike religions like paganism or Hinduism, Christianity beliefs are very vague and loose. An omnipotent being is a general concept that appeals to a lot of people looking for an answer.

In this modern age, no one is really seeking Spirituality - instead people are more interested in Materialism, Power, Money, Sex. Spirituality is no longer in the lists. People now days seek a religion that can quickily solve their Spirituality short comings by joining the least complicated as well as least discipline oriented Religion - the best candidate Christianity - Just believe in Jesus and you automatically given salvation. Sad to say, society no longer has the Spiritual might of the Great Spiritual men of the past to cleanse their own sins & correct their own behaviours - they are too busy in chasing the illusions of Materialism & Power. They just blindly believe in Jesus to fix them up & give them a Salvation Certificate - that is what Christanity is all about! That means Christanity has created about 2 Billion Spiritual Weaklings!
Christanity's Concepts are very very far from the Actual Truth! Salvation can only be given by the Father NOT Jesus! Second, Jesus is NOT GOD! Third, Salvation must be earned by oneself by living a Righteous Path. But that not all. True enlightenment or liberation is only achieved by seeking Spirituality NOT Religion. In fact Religion's last steps are Spirituality's 1st Steps. The real meaning of Spirituality is to Unite with GOD, The Infinite! - that can only be achieved through Self Realization - Not blindly following Jesus - That's pointless!
And Christanity's concept of Jesus dying for the people sins - is really lame! To date, many Men & Women (before & after Jesus Period) have died for their countries & for their families in the name of LOVE. So Jesus death is nothing special!
The Great Old religions have been & will continue to teach Discipline, Righteous Path & Self-Realization for many centuries to come - and this is the real true Path of seeking GOD. Not bribing GOD by blindly believing in Jesus. And another thing Jesus miracle abilities are NOTHING NEW to the Older Religions because the Great Old Rishis of the distant past were able to achieve Greater miracles than Jesus could ever manifest. So don't waste your time talking about Jesus miracles to those who follow the Older Religions' Teachings! The older religions have a Super Long History of Mysticism. In my opinion the only religion that is really comparable to the older religions is Sufism!

I think you should ask, why is it losing its popularity? Because, I guess it lost and continue to lose of its believers.
Of course, it's still 2 billion believers. But I think your question is a little bit strange. Some ten years later, Islam will be the first(statistics say that). It's more interesting to ask, I think. Because, the press and some people are always trying to show Muslims as a bad image! But it's increasing...

It aint! The world is a big place man. The chinese are buddhist. They outnumber us nearly 2 to 1. Muslims are about equal to us in number. Christianity just advertises better so you think there are more of them. The wheel that squeaks the most gets the oil.

Actually, the question asker is correct...Statistically, about 1/3 of everyone on Earth claims to be Christian. A very close second I believe is Islam.

What makes you think Christianity is a religion? Christianity is a reality and has nothing to do with religion. Religion is man made, Christianity is a gift from Our Saviour Jesus Christ.

It's not. Don't be ethno-centric. It's popular in North America because it was 'imported' from Europe.
I believe that several other religions are more largely followed than Christianity.
