Yes.

Years ago I had a boyfriend who's pitbull did the same thing. He took a broom and wedged the handle behind the dog's back teeth and pried it's mouth open. I saw it with my own eyes because he had to do it a few times over the years.

This works because there's naturally a space behind the pitbull's back teeth that allows this to happen.

Warning though...don't get too close or you could be prying the dog's teeth off of you! Stay at least four feet or more away. And DON'T even think of trying this if the pitbull's not your dog. It'll turn and attack anyone who's not it's master and tries to intervene in a fight.

Your dog was lucky to get away with only needing 6 stitches. My dog was also attacked by a pit bull a few months ago and the ONLY way to get them separated was to spray a can of pepper spray on the other dog. This was very effective - the pit bull immediately let go of my dog.

Pit bulls are pretty intense you could try rubbing alcohol or something really noxious but these dogs are tough so to be honest I would get a bat or a shovel like someone else requested and hit the dog as hard as you can in the head. Did this happen on your property or on theirs was the pitbull running off leash, was yours. Reason being is if you dog was on leash and the pit bull wasnt or it was on your property and the pitbull belonged to some one else you can sue them and if you are worried about this happening again you could request it to be put down, another thing to find out is if its vaccinated for rabies if not you can request it be put to sleep on those grounds and have it tested for the safety of yourself and the safety of your dog. If this happens again call the police and they will shoot it. Also warn the owner of the pitbull of these things and it may also ensure they keep better control of it.

It is very dangerous to mess with a pit bull or any dog that is in an attack mode. The only way I can think of would be to somehow knock the pit bull out and he will drop the other dog. Did your dog survive this vicous attack? Sorry this happened to your dog.

BULLET, And BTW I AM NOT ANTI Pitbull. I have a Rotti, and a Lab Chow Shepard mix. Three other dogs as well. BUT these two are on the hit list with Pit Bulls. I believe that ALL dogs are what they are brought up to be.

Wow! I have very few suggestions but I would stay away from the mouth. Try maybe kicking it in the chest or throat. Just know that not all Pits are like this. If raised properly they can be sweet and friendly dogs. I know because I have one and she's one of the friendliest dogs ever.

You need to get a breaking stick. I've seen one used on a dog in NYC. Note that a breaking stick ONLY works on a "grab-and-shake" type of dog such as the pit bull.

No stick? If you have a sharp knife you could cut one or both of the jugular veins of the pit bull.

Usually you can't. That is how my dog got killed two years ago. Hope you called the police and the animal control and had the pit bull taken away. These dogs are extremely dangerous and cannot be trusted. In Ontario, Canada we have banned these dogs.

Turn the da!! owner in. Pit bull owners who do the right thing and control our dogs are getting tried of worrying if they are going to ban our pets because these idiots don't take care of their dogs. If the owner can not control his dog he/she needs not to have one. If you force a large stick behind the back teeth you can open the dogs mouth. I have never had to do that to my pit because my nephew and I have trained and keep control of our dog. Hope your dog will be alright. Do that pit bull a good turn and get it taken away from its owner now.
