I'm only 28, and get heartburn almost every time I eat. Do you think it could be a lack of exercise? Is it my diet? Not enough water? I'm not sure.

It could be caused by any number of things; stress, caffeine, spices, chocolate, juice, fatty foods, etc. Heartburn is actually stomach acid rising up into the esophagus and burning the lining of the esophagus. If over the counter medications are not controlling it, see your doctor for a prescription medication.

What is HEARTBURN?

- Heartburn (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease-GERD) is a sensation of warmth or burning located in the chest or high in the epigastrium with radiation into the neck and occasionally to the arms.

- Occasional heartburn is common in normal persons, but frequent and severe heartburn is generally a manifestation of esophageal dysfunction.

Causes of HEARTBURN

- Heartburn (GERD) is caused by the reflux of the gastric acid and intestinal contents back up the esophagus causing burning sensations, esophageal mucosal damage and in some cases, mucosal erosion (erosive esophagitis).

- Many factors may promote heartburn by reducing lower esophageal sphincter (LES) tone, delaying gastric emptying, increasing acid secretion, or impairing the gastroesophageal pressure gradient.

It is caused by stomach acid coming into the esophagus. Foods like sugar, chocolate, peppermint and caffeine can cause it. I used to get it but when I lost weight it has lessened greatly.

heart burns are mainly due to reflux of food and drins up your digestive tract from the stomach...it is due to the laxity of the sphincter that lies betn the stomach and esophagus...to prevent that avoid eating foods that are oily, spicy and avoid coffee,teas...you can consult the doctor for some medications..

You could have reflux disease. I have it and it is caused by over-production of stomach acid. I take generic Prilosec once a day and have had no more problems.
