Simple answer: Yes. Longer answer: Yes, but. It is possible to run both at the same time, but it is not necessary, and provides no extra level of security, as long as your firewall is configured properly. In fact, running two at the same time can cause problems, and by default, Windows turns off its built-in firewall if it detects one made by a 3rd-party company. I would recommend that you use your purchased firewall (as long as it is from a reputable vendor) instead of the Windows firewall as the XP firewall only monitors incoming traffic, not outbound, and is not as advanced or as configurable. Good luck and happy computing!

Usually yes, depends on the firewall. Some firewalls will disable the Windows Firewall automatically

It is usually not recommended to run two firewalls (or two virus scanners) at the same time. They may conflict or attempt to block each other. Turn off the Windows Firewall

Don't run two firewalls at the same time, they will conflict with each other.

And DO NOT use Windows Firewall, it doesn't even monitor outgoing connections.

Use the one that you purchased (I hope its Zone Alarm or Outpost Firewall).

It is best not to. Run the one you purchased as it will provide more protection and accurate notifications. Windows firewall mainly just does some port protection.

they'll conflict .. if you have a secondary (norton, zone alarm, etc) firewall, turn off the windows firewall. usually the secondary (purchased) firewall will ask permission, then do this automatically.
