If possible, I'd prefer to spend around $2000 max. I'd also like to avoid CRTs.

I'd say you're in a fix! There are three basic types of televisions: cathode ray tube (CRT),liquid crystal display (LCD) or plasma. You could easily find a LCD as big as 60'' for around $2000 but the image quality is poor and the screen has a narrow viewing angle. CRT's are next up on the price range but are unbelievably heavy, some weighing up to 300lb! Plasma has the best image quality of any but prices can be as high as $4000 for a 50''but dropping due to new advancements.
For reference:Sony is the best for CRT's , go with Panasonic for plasmas

I would check the Sony SXRD projector. It is considered by many to have the best picture available at a reasonable price. Some of the new DLP projectors (Mitsubishi, Toshiba, HP) also do an excellent job. These are a little above your price range, but not by much. You may be able to find last year's models at reduced prices. There is nothing wrong with them.
