Humm.. if you want something that will last try a honda or toyota or chevy.. they seem to last longer.. get something good on gas.. like a civic or carola... but first like check with him and see what he is wanting if its not to redictluss check into what he is wanting.. is best to let him like have a say sorta than buying something he doesn't want..

Mini's are cool
VW beetles are good and reliable
all Volvo's are safe (if they have been properly maintained)
But my recommendation for a young mans first car which has both the coolo image and the reliability needed coupled with Fun Fun Fun, is the Mazda MX5, (Miata in US i think) (Eunos in Japan).
They are a true sports car with amazing fuel consumption from an engine size that keeps insurance costs to a reasonable level for first time drivers.
He will love it, go but one now, You will be superdad without a doubt.

I would recommend going through a reputable dealer who certifies their used cars. You might pay a little more, but you'll save when you don't have to fix it every two months.
Whatever you buy, have the radio removed for the first six months. Teens are too often distracted by changing radio stations or CD's. Tell him that if he can go 6 months without a speeding ticket or accident, then he can have the radio back.
Good luck to you both!

I would suggest a hyundai. You can get a used accent for around five but if you shop around you could swing $4000. I has all the power it needs but doesn't have an excess of it. Sono racing and trust me he would try it, every teen does. Next feul Efficiency is excelent to help you with tese gas prices and finally the saftey features are top nautch. They have the ost for the price, to keep him safe

1995-2000 Ford Mustang.
Cool Looking cars for teens are fast (although you dont want him to get hurt) and are classic cars,
My dad has an 1965 Mustang Fastback and we love it.
Also cheap around 4,000 maybe a little more expensive.
Good Luck Finding a car though.

My first Car was a 1985 Buick Park Avenue, and I enjoyed that car very much. I liked the fact that it had a hood that opened up over the front like a corvette.

get him a mid to late 90s Saab. believe it or not, they're getting cheap, everybody that wants a Saab, just wants a new one. they're safe, and very reliable. some still even have a warranty on them. its great! they're around the price you're looking for, and they're really really nice on the inside, and out.
there are lots of examples, but take a look at this one on eBay (there are lots, but this is a good example, the buy it now is $3640, so after taxes, and title, and all that it probably will be around $4000.

i think its pretty. (if i could afford it, i would buy it.) I'm selling my van on eBay right now. but its going for about $2000. the auction on mine ends tomorrow. its a behemoth van.
but look how pretty the inside of that Saab is. put your mouse over the little photos on the left side of the biggest photo towards the bottom of the page, and click on the interior photos (they're posted, but you cant see them unless you drag you mouse up and down on the smaller pictures.) it even still has a warranty on it.

Either an American made car with a 4 cylinder and an automatic transmission or a VW Jetta with a diesel engine so he can burn Bio-Deisel. That way he wouldn't be supporting terrorism.

a larger old suv like a 1500 Chevy Blazer or Suburban. this way if he gets hit or hits someone, chances are he is bigger and will do the hurting, not the other way around. they also have a carbuerator and are not fuel injected. the gas mileage will be o.k. the bigger you are, the less you get hurt in an accident. in my opinion. seat belt doesn't hurt either.
