if someone takes liquid codeine for the first time and it tastes really good and familiar, does that mean they probably really did have it before?

Not necessarily. The solution used for liquid medications can be the same for different drugs. Your medicine is a powder dissolved in a syrup. It's the syrup that you recognize.

You will not find any pills containing codeine sold over the counter in the us, any amount of codeine. The US is a lot different from most countries in that respect, where you can legally purchase over the counter medications containing anywhere from 8mg to 100mg codeine and in many places all types of benzodiazepines. Frankly, it's probably for the best. However, in some states (such as my state, NC), you can legally purchase cough syrup containing codeine and an antihistamine (like promethazine) without a prescription. It's not technically over the counter because you must get it from the pharmacist (not unlike pseudoephedrine) and give them your ID and sign for it. You wont be able to do this at any of the larger chain pharmacies, but the independently owned, small town pharmacies will often do this. Basically the way the law works is you don't technically need a prescription to purchase it, but it's at the discretion of the pharmacist as to whether or not they want to sign out bottles of "prescription strength" cough syrup. So i can tell you with certainty if you go to your friendly neighborhood pharmacy while you're dripping sweat, shaking like a leaf, and in unbearable pain and try to purchase a bottle of codeine cough syrup for your "sister who's had a cough for weeks," they're more than likely going to show you the door. Having said that, I know from personal experience that you can in fact buy codeine cough syrup in NC without a prescription. hope this helps

NO it just means they flavored it and with a flavor that people like which is why it seems familiar. Codeine without flavoring is extremely bitter.

Not necessarily, you can like the taste of something after trying it the first time.
