All you will need is an american license, since you are only visiting..
I was there not too long ago, and let me for-warn you..1.) they think that US drivers SUCK! lol ..2.) watch out for roundabouts..they are tricky at first..3.) when you go on the interstate..GO FAST..4.) check with the laws..its illegal to pass in a certain lane on the highway 5.) Traveling usually goes faster than in America..though..if there is a wreck UK..you might be stranded for hours!
Driving is wonderful over there! While driving...look out your window at all times and check on the hills of the road..Beautiful Estates, green hills, and if your lucky you will see a few castles!

You need a passport and valid driver license with photo issued in the US. Originally international drivers licenses were recommended, which we got, but they were never even acknowledged. Will you attend any of the Military Tatoo in Edinburgh (ends 8/26) or theater and film festival events? When you drive south, don't miss Chester (Roman walls still exist), New Brighton Beach (a quaint sea side spot) and Liverpool (for obvious reasons). Ta.
