You put your shoes where the dog can't get them (in the closet behind a closed door or in a box).

Peace!

One of two methods, whichever works.

1.) More than anything, dogs want attention and affection. Generally, you'll find he's done something like eat your shoes while you're away from home. Get into the habit of INSPECTING the premises, first, before acknowledging him in any way whatsoever. If he has been good, SHOWER him with affection and praise for a good 5 minutes or so. If he's been bad, DO NOT SCOLD HIM (negative attention is still attention). Instead, act as if he does not exist. Do not look at him, say his name, or touch him. Eventually, he will catch on and come to apologize, but that generally takes a couple of hours. In a couple of weeks, his bad behavior should stop...but continue you're inspections...consistency is everything.

2.) If he's the type that runs and hides, all you need is a beanbag. This also works if he's the type to take walks on his own. You need to bean him with the beanbag. The ponit isn't to hurt him, but to show him that yes you CAN get him, while he's going na-na-na you can't get me. If it's night, and you're outside, use a flashlight. It prevents him from actually seeing you, as he only sees the light. Unfortunately, he will forever be afraid of flashlights after that.

Both methods work after about two weeks. You MUST be consistent. The point is that you are appealing to HIS social structure, and establishing YOUR alpha-dog status, by showing him on his own terms that he is subordinate to you.

No yelling or spanking needed.

Spray the shows with a light coat of Grannik's bitter apple (available at most pet stores like PetCo or PetSmart).

Also, if you see the sog about to chew on the shoes, offer it a toy to distract it. If you catch it chewing your shoes, give it a stern NO and take the shoe away, then offer it a toy and praise it when he plays with the toy.

Put your shoes in the closet and close the door. Your dog is bored, get it some chew toys to use.

Send the dog to obedience school or teach them obedience yourself. You can pick up books for obedience at book stores.

Something I found very useful was to buy them toys or raw hides, bones and leave them out so they can chew on them whenever they want to. If you catch them chewing on your shoe or anything they are not supposed to, just take it away tell them no and hand them something that is ok to chew on. I hope this helps. Good luck!

I have a new puppy, that chews alot! I have to be careful not to leave shoes or socks out. I have to watch him all the time and tell him no when he picks something up that he is not supposed to have.

Put the shoes where the dog can't get it, and you wont have this problem, or close the room to the door that has the shoes.

Keep your shoes away from him!

When you catch him in the act, give him a sharp scolding and show him exactly what he's done. But don't bother shouting at him if you find the evidence long after he's been at your shoes as he'll have forgotten what he's done by then.

Put your shoes away. The puppy is just doing his little job when he chews!
