The Number of the Beast (666) is a concept from the Book of Revelation of the Christian New Testament. The Number is 666 in modern texts, although 616 appears instead in one ancient source. The meaning of the number is debated. In some interpretations of Christian eschatology the Beast to which the number refers is believed to be the Antichrist or a being under its control,[ whereas scholars like Dr. Delbert Hillers contend that the number is a code for the Roman Emperor Nero, a view that is also supported by the Roman Catholic Church.

The numbers 0-9 as we now know them are adapted from Arabic adaptations of Indian numerals dating from between the 8th and 10th century AD. Long after anything important in the Bible, anyway.
666 is supposed to be a symbol of the devil because it's an upside-down 999, which is his true symbol (3x3=9, 3 times, where 3 is really bad), but 666 is a kind of deception and therefore an even truer symbol for the devil (if that makes any sense). What I don't get is how 666 could be a reversal of 999 before the numbers 6 or 9 existed.
My theory is that European-Christian reactionaries decided to target Arabic numbers during the Middle-Ages and Crusades as being the signs of the devil as a form of propoganda against Islam.

666 is from the Book of Revelation which is apocalyptic literature, meaning that it is full of symbols. 666 is one of the symbols that needs interpretation.
The number 7 was considered to be perfect, then 6 was imperfect and 3 of them was the most imperfect, so 3 6's.
Besided, letters and numbers in many alphabets are the same, so numbers can spell things (numerology). In this case it is most likely a reference to Nero who was the emperor at the time the book was written.
The Book of Revelation says it is the number of a "man" not a beast or a demon and that it can be understood by those who are reading the book.

The number 666, is as a sum total, i.e., Six hundred and sixty six. Revelation 13 : 18 makes it very clear: "Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six."
666 is the number of a man. What man? -- the man of sin:
II Thessalonians 2 : 1 - 9 tells the future: Verse 1: "Now we bessech you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and by our gathering together unto him, {the rapture}
Verse 2 : "That ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand.
Verse 3: "Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first {apostasy}, and THAT MAN OF SIN BE REVEALED, THE SON OF PERDITION;
Verse 4: "Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.
Verse 5: "Remember ye not, that, when I was yet with you, I told you these things?
Verse 6: "And now ye know what withholdeth that he might be revealed in his time.
Verse 7: "For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way.
Verse 8: "AND THEN SHALL THAT WICKED BY REVEALED, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming:
Verse 9: "EVEN HIM, WHOSE COMING IS AFTER THE WORKING OF SATAN with all power and signs and lying wonders."
God uses double entendres many times in the bible. For example, the number 666 is just that, a sum totalling six hundred sixty six; it also is a sort of numerical acronym in that 7 is the number of perfection and since God is a triune God (Father, Son and Holy Spirit), the number of man in general is 6 - for man was created on the 6th day. The UNHOLY TRINITY during the Tribulation Period will consist of Satan, the beast or antichrist, and the false prophet. Thus the numerical acronym of 666. Remember that the number is the number of A man, the man of sin, the son of perdition, the beast.
What does it mean when the bible says that the number of his name is 666? Here is what it means: the numerical value of the letters which make up the man's name will total 666, i.e., six hundred sixty six. Hebrew letters each have a numerical value, thus the man's name in Hebrew would consist of Hebrew letters with a numerical value of six hundred sixty six. To illustrate: Hitler's last name only in Hebrew equivalents would be FOUR letters representing the consonant sounds alone: H T L R.
Jesus tells us in Revelation 13 : 18: Let him that hath understanding COUNT the number of the beast:
In other words, count out the numerical value of the man's name in it's letters. For more understanding of how the Hebrew alephbet works, go to http://www.jewfaq.org/alephbet.htm
I hope this has helped. 666 doesn't have to frighten you if you make Jesus Christ (Y'shua) your LORD and Savior. You can skip the triblulation, the antichrist, and all of God's wrath by inviting Jesus into your heart and life today. God bless you!

nobody really knows it is simply guess work. Some suggest Nero but that spelling used to get his name to add up to 666 is not a common spelling so I would doubt it. Another suggestion is the Latin word for Latin speaking man. What ever it is I believe at this point it might be lost to history. It is also possible that people are thinking about it the wrong way, that maybe it is not simply a name that adds up to 666 in Roman numerals.

Number of a man. Not scary at all unless you do not know what it is about. It is the head of a church that has political authority as well as spiritual authority that the whole world wanders after. Want more info, check out the site below.

It represents the devil but to me it's just a number because I don't believe in the devil. No object is evil until you make it represented that way.

The mark of the beast, the anti-christ who will fool everyone into thinking he wants peace, everyone will love him. He will solve all the problems that we've gotten ourselves into, and then Boom! He turns on everyone and wants everyone to worship him, he even sets himself up in the temple in the middle east.
Many will be deceived who do not know God, because they don't know what the Scriptures say, this is foretold to we Christians and we are to look for it and know when it happens.
