So you can hold on to it better...?

Actually it says about it in Wikipedia:

This story credits the invention of the doughnut hole to a Danish sea captain named Hanson Gregory. During a particularly violent storm, Gregory needed both hands free to man the wheel of his ship, and impaled a fried cake upon the wheel, creating the signature hole. The center of fried cakes were notorious for being undercooked, so the innovation stuck. By cooking fried cakes with the center hole, the surface area increased, and the doughnut cooked faster.

It Wouldn't Look That Great Without The Hole. With The Hole It Looks Attractive, and More Tastier. A Donut Is Better, With The Hole.

It was discovered some time ago that donuts cooked quicker and more evenly with the hole. That refers to plain donuts fried in hot oil rather than baked. Without the hole, they'd often be crispy on the outside and still raw on the inside, and if you left 'em cook longer, the outside would get overdone.

So you can easily get them out of the grease!

Sing to the tune of Turkey in the Straw:

Well, I had a little Chickie
that wouldn't lay an egg
so I poured hot water up and down her leg
and the little Chickie hollered and the little chickie begged
and the little chickie laid a hard boiled egg!

Well, I , went to Cincinnatti and I walked around the block
and I walked right in to a bakery shop
and I took 3 donughts right out of the grease
and I handed the man a five cent piece
Well... he... looked at the nickle and he looked at me
and he said this nickles no good to me
there's a hole in the middle theres a hole right through
and I said...
Theres a hole in your donught too!
Thanks for the donughts!!
Bye!

So you can break the donut easily, to dunk it. If you don't want a donut to have a hole, you could get a jelly filled one. I like the cherry filled and lemon filled, myself.
