I got a region 2 DVD and a region 3 DVD today in the mail

My X-box won't play either one

I tried the region 2 on our old DVD player (c. 2002) and it worked fine. I haven't tried the region 3 yet.

So I'm wondering, aside from X-box, do DVD players in the US play any region coding or just specific DVD players... and if it's specific DVD players, what should I look for on the box that will let me know it'll work?

Region encoding is a means of controlling the manufacture of the players themselves and it detriments the end user by not being able to watch some content. There are a number of newer lower end DVD players available in the US market, like certain models from Cyberhome and Philips, which do subvert the region encoding, or can easily be modified to subvert the region encoding. Do a google search for Region Free DVD Players or similar and you will be SHOCKED at what you can learn!

Hope this helps!

Most of the DVD players sold in America are region 1.

There are some that can play multiple regions. One I know of for sure is the Phillips DVP5960 , and I think LG also makes one.

Another option would be to type in "Multi-region DVD players" on your favorite search engine and see if you can find one there.

I believe that north america is region 1.
Specificially for the entire north american region.
Anything bought in the united states should be only region 1 players ,excluding e-bay. which could be anywhere.
