Usually ant poisons will have information on the can to say whether it is safe for household pets so look out for that. Also, even if you choose a poison that is safe, try to keep the cats away from the spot you are using the poison for a few days just to be on the safe side.

If they are house cats, you can treat the outside of the house. Then find the spot that they are coming in at and put the cats in another room then treat that area, and the ant trail. After the ants are dead clean that chemical up and let your cats back into the rest of the house. Periodical treat the outside of the house to keep the ant out.

I use the tiny ant bait stations and set them in out of the way places my 2 cats can't reach. No more ants and healthy cats, too!

My family uses those ant food traps. The cats (we have two) and dog pretty much leave them alone and it gets rid of the ants rather effectively.

Sevin dust is the safest, most effective ant poison to use around animals. As long as the cats aren't ingesting it (by rolling in it and licking themselves, or eating lots of insects that get into it), it shouldn't hurt them.
If you have concerns or questions about animals and pesticides, always consult your vet.

Use Murphy's Oil Soap. Just spray it on the ants then around the base of your cupboards, walls, and windows. That should keep them away.

Natural ant killer

1 tbs sugar
1 tbs molasses
1 tbs yeast

Mix together, put a blob where you see ants.

If animals eat this, it won't hurt them.
