Did the North take over? Is it still a communist nation? I have always wondered and am apparently too lazy to look it up.

yes the north came in and later arrested anyone known and put them in education camps to retrain them in communism and a lot escaped in boats now they have favoured trading status and the new generatiion is open to american trade and our music and some of them are trying capitolist stores and trades as the government allows more freedoms to do business and McCain and Kerry were the senators that started the commitee to find wardead in that country and have helped to find and bring back american bodies and report about lost americans from the viet nam war and saigon is now Ho Chi Min city

The South fell the day after the Democrat controlled US congress removed the funding for the South Vietnamese government.

For the next 25 years, the people of Vietnam lived in poverty and despair under Communist rule. Things are getting better there now as the government has opened the country somewhat and allowed some freedom to its people.

The Communists are also allowing foreign capital and some free market activity which is improving the lives of the people.

North Vietnam rebuilt their military then launched a conventional invasion of South Vietnam. South Vietnam was conquered and absorbed into N. Vietnam in a manner similar to what Hitler intended to to with Poland.

Every schoolteacher, every public employee, every journalist, every mayor, member of a town council, every university professor, and countless others were arrested and thrown into concentration camps. Some managed to escape these camps and flee the country. Many simply 'disappeared' in those camps. And the survivors were eventually released - to work as farm labor under house arrest for the remainder of their lives.
