Can dogs have pink eye? My 2 female dogs fought a couple of days ago. They have been raised together since birth. It was unusual for them to be fighting. I asked some of the people at the hospital I volunteer at about that strange fight. They all said that one of my dogs was in heat. The fight was very severe. There was blood. My mom said they fought at night when I was asleep. The dog that was not in heat was bleeding and there was gel-like stuff around her eyes. Her wound healed, so I thought everything was going to be ok, but today I noticed green crusty stuff around her eyes. I think it might be pink eye, because it is red around her pupils. I will take her to the vet soon, but what should I do iin the meantime. Is there a medication for this? I am soo scared. Please help!!!!

Gee..a trip to the vet and some spaying of dogs is in order, don't you think?????????? They need to be spayed or the fighting will continue and it may well continue anyway.
The dog may have conjunctivitis, or there was an injury during a fight,or it is a virus.....she needs to see a vet.
God, I hope you aren't planning on breeding them.

It sounds like during the fight one dog scratched the other in the eye. The 'gel-like stuff' was most likely aqueous humour from inside the eyeball. The 'green crusty stuff' shows that there is an infection at least on the surface of the eye. If the infection is also inside the eyeball it may need to be removed. If the eye was punctured she may already be blind in that eye. This is an emergency- you should take her to the vet immediately.

One of the most common eye problems for dogs and cats is conjunctivitis. Also known as pinkeye, conjunctivitis is an inflammation of the membrane covering the inside of the eyelids and the front of the eye.Caused by such things as allergies, infections or even distemper,it can make your pet's eyes crusty, itchy and red, with an ugly abundance of pus or tears.
To speed healing and make your pet more comfortable, you'll want to clean the discharge from her eyelids.Wet a soft, clean cloth or cotton ball with lukewarm water, squeeze it out and gently wipe away the goop from around your pet's eyes.Repeat twice a day or as often as needed.
Instead of using water, you may want to try an over-the-counter eye scrub.Eye scrubs are pH-balanced and may cause less stinging than water. You can buy eye srubs at pet stores, but scrubs formulated for humans are just as effective.Just follow the directions as if your pet were human.
While eye scrubs can help keep the lids clean, you'll also want to wash the surface of the eye.A good way to do this is with artificial tears, which can help wash away particles that may be causing the problem.
Covering your pet's eyes with a damp, warm compress can be very soothing.Wet a soft, clean cloth in lukewarm water, wring it out,and gently hold it acroos her eyes for five minutes. This can make your pet's eyes feel much better, and it goes a long way toward keeping her eyes clean. If your pet balks at having both eyes covered, apply the compress to one eye for about five minutes. Then rinse the cloth and place it on the other eye.Of course, you can skip this step if only one eye is affected.

Pink eye = conjunctivitis - and yes, your dog could have that -especially if her eye was scratched in the fight. Until you can get her in, I would take a warm washcloth and wipe the crust away from her eye. Get her in ASAP!!!!!!!!

The vet may give you some type of eye ointment or drops.

Get your dogs spayed!!!!!!!!! The hormones is the reason why they fought...even when they are spayed, some females will still fight - but spaying them will help!

They have the hormonal drive to compete to breed - even if no male around - so they will fight. I am a second year veterinary student, and this is what an applied animal behaviorist (i.e. DVM and board certified behaviorist) told our class - please take it seriously; she said in rare cases some females will fight to the death.

Get your dogs fixed. And get the one with the eye infection to the vet. Now not soon. She has an infection and if it goes untreated and it is that close to her eye that the eye is red then she could loose her eye sight. If the fight was that severe you should have take her to the vet then.

Go to the vet now. It could be contagious and spread to your other dog. Treat it now. That would be best for you and both of your dogs.

They probably have some type of bacterial infection which may include pink eye.
GET IMMEDIATE VET TREATMENT...DON'T TRY HOME REMEDIES.
THIS DOES SOUND SERIOUS AND SHOULD BE TREATED BY A PROFESSIONAL.
