I am learning Spanish and am rated either a high intermediate or a low advance Spanish speaker. I listen to the Spanish radio station constantly. I want to learn Spanish because this country is becoming both an English speaking and a Spanish speaking country. No law is going to change that. Advertisers are the driving force for bi-lingual signs everywhere. Europeans have no trouble learning several languages. They don't get heartburn over it. They accept it as a matter of course because they want to communicate.
No reason we can't do the same here.
Screw those who denigrate Spanish speakers.

On the surface, this may sound like a silly question, but actually, the "why" part is interesting. Originally, Spain spoke Spanish. I believe that Spain was a country that Rome conquered and made part of the Empire, so the official language was Latin, but there were also local people there who spoke their own languages which probably mixed with Latin to eventually become Spanish. During the Moorish occupation of Spain, that language absorbed many Arabic words. Spanish words that begin with the letters "AL," like algebra, for example, have their origins in Arabic and Spanish.

When Spain started exploring to celebrate the conquering of the Moors in 1492, they brought their language with them. So, countries like Mexico, most of central and south America, and the island of Puerto Rico, were conquered by the Spanish.

I do.

Why? Because I took languages in college and Spanish was one of them. Plus, I love the language. And it's probably the most widely spoken language in the world after English, so it's useful to know.
