When you sneeze your heart stops for like .003 seconds.
So in the olden days people would say God bless you because your life stopped for a quick moment, so they are haveing God bless your soul if you die.
People still say it to this day but dont why.

Summer is correct...your heart DOES stop when you sneeze..and when you do BTW it is appx at 56 miles per hour. To say 'bless you' is old school...very old school for blessing in the event of the heart stopping. There are many myths to this...I do NOT know the first myth..or even what holds water save that it is acknowledging your precious existence....we always say "Bless you three times...." and nearly laugh..as strangely they will seemingly come i threes....odd huh? Hence my answer...and in advance of your next sneezing attack I say "Bless You"~ One I had an allergic reaction vaso vago and my face swole up as I sneezed for nearly 40 minutes...nearly went into ER....I love your questin as in this format I can tell others this is NOTHING to laugh at. If it is allergies or just a bit of dust...whatever......My face swole from the constant sneezing like a mask...and it took its toll on my chest..thought it would cave in. Ultimately I took a Benadryl stopped and to this day nothing like that has happened since....so Bless You Bless You Bless You..and oh BTW Be Well.....

Because it was once believed your soul left your body when you sneezed. In order to prevent it from staying out of the body, one must get blessed after they sneeze. Most people don't think about that now, it is just considered polite.

Yes. Would you like to know?? I'll tell you even if you didn't. Well, it is thought that your heart skips a beat when you sneeze, so people say God bless you because they are hoping your heart won't stop forever.

It's an old folk tale that when someone sneezes they are letting out evil spirits. This came from the middle ages of Europe. People were sick and people would bless them thinking that would help.

Sneezing was one of the early symptoms of the plague in Europe.
People were asking God to bless you, because they thought you'd be with Him soon.

It's because technically when you sneeze, your heart temporarly stops. Saying God bless you is kind of a prayer that your heart will keep going.

Way, way, way back in medieval times, people thought that you sneezed because evil spirits were escaping your body. Therefore, people would say "God bless you!" because they thought you could be a target of evil spirits. I wonder what happened to people with allergies?
