Yes. Tell the doctor that you would prefer to limit any medication for anxiety because you heard that it can make anxiety far worse over the long term (rebound anxiety).
There is alot that can be done for anxiety disorders. However, medication isn't the best treatment option. The problem is the medication gradually stops being effective and then, when you stop taking it, your anxiety is far worse (it returns to normal after awhile). I'm talking tranquilizers here. Understand that anxiety disorders and depressive disorders are strongly related. Sometimes, giving medication that treats depression, relieves the anxiety. These don't cause rebound anxiety. Use drugs like Xanax with caution, though.
Your best bet is to ask for a referral to a Licensed Clinical Psychologist. This is the type of doctor qualified to treat your condition and is your best bet for relief.

When you say you wake up wondering if it'a all real do you mean wondering if you imagined having a problem?
If so, I've been in the same situation. You feel like maybe you overreacted or maybe the doctor will say you're fine.
Trust me, YOU know yourself. You need someone to help and the doctor won't dismiss it just because you can't explain it too well or remember exact events.
Someone suggested a journal. Try writing down when you have an attack. Even if you have no more between then and now, the doctor can explain to you what attacks are and they will ask specific questions about things you didn't even think to say.
It's tough finally asking for help after letting it go so long. You start to doubt yourself and think "Well if i've been dealing with it all these years, it can't be as big a deal as I've made it." Don't downplay what you feel. You've been strong, now let someone help. Good luck =)

I am 33years old and have had panic and anxiety since i was 22. Your doctor can talk to you about different medications that can really help. Everything you described is the same as me. I stopped taking my meds awhile back and my attacks started back recently. I am now on Zoloft, and am starting to feel alot better. Untill you go to the doctor try and keep yourself busy, if you feel an attack coming on, go outside, go for a ride...etc..anything to take your mind off whats happening. One good thing, panic and anxiety wont kill you :)

Keep a journal about what you were thinking and doing at the time of your panic attack. Most attacks have triggers, and knowing what causes yours will help the doctor with your diagnosis, and help you with your recovery.
I have two friends who have panic attacks. One can't travel because she's scared of being caught away from a bathroom, and the other is afraid he'll have a panic attack (He has panic attacks about having panic attacks)

I had similar attacks.. I used to wake up in pools of sweat and breathing erratically, worried and scared.... but it's all a state of mind... there could be some problem in the back of your head which you haven't aknowledged. there could be some fear which you haven't faced. it's not an overnight process. you'll probably need to see a psychiatrist of psychologist for this. there's no real quick cure to this. you'll need to work through it. but for temporary remedies, try taking deep breaths. you can also try herbal teas. camomile generally works best. or even peppermint. can't think of anything else at the moment but feel free to write to me if you want more advise :)

Listen to calming music. Don't have anything with caffiene in it. And anytime you get scared take deep breathes and count up to ten and then back down from ten.

Stay calm, do not drink or eat after 5pm or so because if you eat late at night it gives you bad dreams. Get a teddy bear.

if you feel a panic attack coming on close your eyes and try to clear your mind- minimize noise/distractions. count backwards from one hundred relax your muscles get as comfortable as you can and try to meditate. peppermint tea works but you can also try valerian root, st., john's wort from your local heralth food/herbalist store. don't despair this happens to a lot of us. good for you for recognizing that you can get help for this; it is treatable.
