You can use a mild soapy water
(like Ivory dishwashing soap) to gently clean the disk. When you dry it, use a soft absorbant cotton cloth and gently wipe from the center hole out to the edge. Don't rub in a circle.

Cd Cleaning Solution

Actually...just a damp, lint-free, non-abrasive cloth should do it

But...here's other ideas

Steps:
1. Distill or filter tap water, or use bottled water. (Image 1)

2. Put a drop of dishwashing detergent and lots of the purified water (around a quart) in a large bowl. (Image 2)

3. Thoroughly mix the solution. (Image 3)

Make sure to remove all the solution from the CD by drying with a soft, lint-free cloth. Dry by wiping from the center of the CD outward, NOT in a circular motion.

This solution will work on audio CDs, CD-ROM discs and DVDs.

Commercial CD cleaning fluids might be safer to use.

Warnings:
Any commercial or homemade product that successfully cleans CDs might leave a residue that will cause sonic degradation or long-term erosion.

Alcohol, abrasive cleaners, petroleum-based products, ammonia, commercial plastic cleaners and Armor All will damage CDs.

Lotion by eHow Friend
Put lotion on the CD, rub until CD is covered, then wipe clean with a soft towel from center to outside edge, not in circles.
(Seems to me this would leave a dust collecting residue)

RE:
What is CD cleaning solution made of? Can it be homemade?

Using a homemade solution would most likely void your warranty and possible screw in your device. I'd advise contacting the manufactuer for advice, or to see if you can buy direct from them. Failing that, check Amazon and eBay, you may even make a killer saving.

You can clean them with rubbing alcohol, or soap and water. Rub them from the label outward; never run in circles. Be sure the CDs are not scratched on the label side—that can quickly lead to corrosion of the reflective metal layer, ruining the disk.
