It will either have a dent in it, hang at a weird angle, or hang limp and not move. If the injury is up high on the tail, it may need to be amputated. See a vet.

The obvious way is to run your hand along its tail to feel as if there are any abnormalities. The cats main use for their tails is to maintain their balance. Monitor your cats performance i.e when jumping. The cat would also probably drag the tail along the floor and if its a breakage should show some signs of pain and discomfort

Two ways for YOU to check is to look and see if its in a wierd position (basicly at an angle that is NOT normal) if that looks ok...press gently on the tail in all area's...if the the cat is in pain he/she will let you know. If everything seems fine then...the only way would be an x-ray. More than likely if you can press on the tail without the cat going nuts...your good to go.

If your cat has a broken tail, most likely there will be a feature of it's broken-ness.
Sometimes they'll show kinks in the part that was either hurt of broken.
In emotion, they'll probably make a sign of fussy-ness once you stroke it. Or just maybe, they'll be paying extra attention to it as it hurts very much.
Take them to the vet if your cat has any of these things.

it is very common for cats to break bones in their tail at the end. Lots of cats have kinks in them and if it is broken near the tip of the tail....there is not much you can do. I have never known a vet to repair a broken cat tail..they just let it be and the cat is fine. If it is kinked near the spine...that can be more serious and you should take it to the vet for an evaluation to see if they want to correct it or just leave it be.

My poor cat smokey broke his tail when he went under a rocking chair. We noticed it when his tail made a perfect 90 degree turn. If your cat does this he has broken his tail.

If it isnt moving or not moving very well and of course it would be extremely painful for the cat and more then likely he would not want you touching it or anywhere near it. But the sure fire way to tell if it is broken is the have the veterinarian examine it and maybe have xrays done to confirm.

you can tell if its crooked or you can feel for a like knot in the tail if the cat shows any discomfort or you do feel a knot then it probably is but you might want to get an X-ray just to be sure

Does it scream and/or hiss when you stroke its tail? Cause if it does, it most likely has a broken tail...you could always go to a vet for X-Rays if needed.

actually you can't break a tail as its muscle not bone. the tail is very flexible and sensitive. you can bend it and feel the muscle in it if the cat lets you. they use it for sensing, communicating. if you step on their tail, the nerves in it lets you know as they cry out and slap you for doing it. any swelling is caused by muscle damage.
