If you've done your research, you know that African Grey parrots are extremely intelligent and sensitive. You may want to locate a avian rescue in your area to find a bird. often there are people who buy greys and then find out that they are not able to care for them properly. The rescue can help you decide if the grey is a bird for you and introduce you to the species. After filling out an application and some initial investigation, they can find a Grey for you at a nominal cost. They can also tell you the pros and cons of Grey ownership such as the time and expense that you must invest. They are wonderful birds and deserve an equally wonderful home. Too often people by a Grey and then decide that they demand too much time or are too messy and too expensive.

Parrots make really terrible pets for most people. They are very intelligent and social creatures. They need almost constant attention to be happy. And when a parrot is unhappy, it can make your life miserable.
Some of them are so loud they can permanently damage your hearing. Screaming is a very natural behavior for parrots, and they'll gladly do it at dawn every morning, not to mention any time you're in sight and not paying attention to them.
A parrot's idea of fun is destroying anything it can get its beak on.
Their bites can be extremely painful, and even small parrots can do a lot of damage if they feel like it.
Parrots are hard to understand and impossible to predict. A behavior you might see as cute or friendly may in fact be a display of aggression. Misunderstandings with parrots can be very painful and leave you with ugly scars. I know this from personal experience. I still have a great deal of pain from a bite wound I received more than two years ago.
When parrots reach sexual maturity, unpaired birds can go from difficult to impossible. Even hand-reared birds often become very aggressive. Some, particularly African Greys, will even begin mutilating themselves in a last-ditch attempt to relieve their frustration. I have seen this personally, and it's not pretty. If you can't provide a mate for these birds (which is the best solution for the bird, but often makes them unwilling to be handled), the only effective treatment is often sedatives. The dosage required to keep them from tearing themselves open is often also enough to make them too groggy to eat. It's terrible for the bird, and frustrating for the people who are doing their best to help them.
Most people who get parrots as pets don't keep them, and being shuffled from one home to the next makes for one very distraught and unpleasant bird.
The best advice I can give anyone who wants to get a parrot as a pet is don't. Please, think about what's best for the bird.

Lol!! I doubt you will get one for free they're very demanded birds and very expensive. They're about 1000$ each.If you can't afford to buy one I doubt you could afford to look after one. Even if you did adopt one if your not paying for him the least you could do is take him to the vet yourself. If you can't afford it forget about it. Seriously they need alot of time and attention and if he was to fall ill and you can't pay the vet bill he would die and thats just crewl. Either you take the responsability or forget about it, maybe get smaller bird. Like conures, parakeets, lovebirds... quakers are really talkative and playfull birds and not so big or expensive.

Please go to the yahoo group africangreyparrotclub for more info. they can put you in touch with good breeders or adoption programs. They are wonderful birds, but not easy or cheap to care for and feed properly. :)
