He beat Joe Louis when Louis was past his prime. He won the title from Jersey Joe Walcott who was, at the time, the oldest Heavyweight champion. He beat former champion Ezzard Charles. It can be argued that Marciano was able to retire undefeated because there weren't that many great heavyweights during the 1950's. However, he was never accused of ducking an opponent and he beat everyone who got into the ring with him. That deserves a great deal of respect in any era.

Marciano fought some very good fighters and yes some very bad ones. But what heavyweight champion, other than ali, who fought Liston (although there are speculations as to why Ali won those fights), Foreman, Frazier, Shavers and many other well known fighters. Joe Louis had his "Bum of the Month" club when he was champ. As devastating as Tyson was, we'll look back and question the caliber of his opponents as well. Let's give Rocky his due as the only undefeated Heavyweight Champion ever.
