China is a massive country by definition, both demographically and by the landmass it occupies. Also, a large percentage of the population lives in tight spaces, and especially those in the rural areas depend a great deal on poultry. Hygiene measures are almost non existent when it comes to handling the birds. Close contact to birds is the main way of transmission of the virus from fowl to humans so far, and China provides some excellent conditions. Foreign exports of poultry for the country are also important and have probably played a role in the world spread of the virus.

It's only deadly for the birds. And even then not so deadly as you may think.

The human deaths attributed to HN51 in China totals less than ten in the past two years.

More people have died outside China from Bird Flu. More People in Indonesia have died from the disease than in China.

The reason the virus is so deadly for birds in China is simple...when even one isolated case is found at a farm or market, the local officials swoop down and kill any bird caught in the vicinity to prevent the disease spreading further. Hundreds of thousands of Chickens did not neccessarily die from H5N1, but rather from measures taken to halt the infection spreading.

the new flu strains have always originated in se asia..i'm not sure how debatable the reasons are....in any case it tends to spread from animals to humans when humans are in close contact with the animals..that happens in china...also in china, people spit and that tends to spread it between people at a faster rate....but once it gains human to human transmission..not much can stop it..other than vaccines.

Poor people who live out in rural areas often have no handy place to wash their hands after handling poultry. We in techologized nations take personal cleanliness and public sanitation for granted way too much.
