Just leave him outside on his own for a while. He will eventually start wandering. You might also go around the house and come in through the fence so that he will not think you are sitting there watching him.

Walk him around and praise him when he does his business. At 5 months old he should be able to hold his bladder for 4-5 hours.A doggie door would be great. This is kind of weird but I would have a male adult friend to urinate in a cup and pour it in a spot in the yard. Male dogs are lead to the spot and they will pee there. It didn't work with my pee. I guess they are marking the territory too? They can tell the difference.Oh Lawd! Praise the dog. The repetitive factor is like saying hippopotamus 1000 times Training through a doggie door or tying a cow bell on a string are great tools. Ring the bell and put the dog out and praise him. Do this a lot. At first the dog may ring the bell just to see you open the door to let him out for nothing. But he will catch on. The same thing goes for a doggie door.Put him through it with a friend on the other side to praise him over and over. Both techniques are great, because the dog may not need to do his business when you take him out. Repetition, repetition, repetition.Don't give up, don't rub his nose in his mistakes because dogs are not offended by their own (ya know).Have a great day and hang in there.

Toss a couple of treats in the yard, Like one or two, and let him find them.. Do this each time BEFORE you take him out, (don't let him see you with the treats).. He will get accustomed to going and smelling around the yard, and eventually get the idea that there is food out there some where for him.. and he will actually want to go hunting for them by himself. ... Hopefully in the process he figures out what he is supposed to do out there as well..

You should be going out with him to verbally praise him when he goes outside...it helps to go out in the hose breaking process. The older he gets, the more independent he will become!!! Trust me - there may come a time when you can't get him to come anywhere near you.

he's got a long way to go, have patience, stay outside with him, and make a game of it , something challenging for him like hiding his favorite ball and having him find it. usually, the pottying comes naturally, thats not a forced issue with dogs of any type if they have to go they will.
