Sourceforge would not participate any illegal activities. You can trust them as much as Microsoft.

If it's listed on the Sourceforge site, it's legal and it's generally 100% virus free.

Well, you don't have to worry because all software hosted on SourceForge is open-sourced, which means you can download the code and alter it as you please. All programs are listed as freeware. If you want more information, during installation, an End User License Agreement (EULA) will be displayed. Read the EULA for information about how the software is to be used and what are your rights in regards to the software program. Usually, it says you can install the program on any computer(s).

Anything put on SourceForge is not "copywrited". It is an open-source community.

SourceForge is a very reliable place to get software. It's pretty much all safe and free stuff, and...if the project is very active, probably original and quality programming.
