The sandwich was invented when the Earl of Sandwich wanted to eat and continue playing cards and had the meat from his meal placed between two pieces of bread so that he could achieve this. If this is the acid test for a sandwich, then the hot dog would pass provided that it wasn't overfilled with onions, ketchup and other sauce so as to make the cards sticky and mark them.
