Sigmoidoscopy is the minimally invasive medical examination of the large intestine from the rectum through the last part of the colon. There are two types of sigmoidoscopy, flexible sigmoidoscopy, which uses a flexible endoscope, and rigid sigmoidoscopy, which uses a rigid device. Flexible sigmoidoscopy is today generally the preferred procedure. Sigmoidoscopy is a very effective screening tool. Sigmoidoscopy is similar but not the same as colonoscopy. Sigmoidoscopy only examines up to the sigmoid, the most distal part of the colon, while colonoscopy examines the whole large bowel.

Don't know what you mean about the second part of your question. are you referring to whether or not the procedure is done as a inpatient or outpatient procedure? if so, that would be done on an outpatient basis.

The other answers have covered what it is. But I've had two. the first was done years ago and was painful and distressing. the last one was about 3 years ago. I just lay on a table, the doctor put a cannula, like a needle in to a vein. That's so they can give you drugs easily. I had a painkiller and a sedative. I felt a little pain and it wasn't too bad - not as bad as having it without the drugs. It is a good idea to take someone responsible with you. I left my coat with the pockets full of drugs when I came out! But obviously you are a little stoned afterwards. The most the nurse did was hold my hospital gown closed at the back while I went to the table I was to lie on! I did have a nurse ask a lot of silly questions before it started. You do normally have to take powerful laxatives to clear the bowel for 2 days before and follow a special diet. The diet means you avoid stuff you aren't likely to digest. The diet is a low residue diet.

it is a clinic procedure were the doctor inspects the sigmoid portion of the large intestine , this is the terminal 40 cm of the large intestine , using a sigmiodoscope , which is a rigid hollow , tube , he inserts it through the anal opening using a lubricant and he visually can inspect the sigmoid, as far as nursing care , not much is needed , some doctors prefer the patient to have cleared his rectum , so they may give them a laxative for a day or two , the procedure is slightly uncomfortable , but not pain-full
