I thought America was in favour of free-trade and competition and whatever happened to champion the underdog (Apple? Linux?)? Are these values gone forever from America?

In fact, that is what the court cases have been all about.

Take a look at the Microsoft stock reports. They have not increased earnings significantly since 1999. That means that they have been forced to spend money defending their innovations.

Here is how I see the competition.

1. Microsoft got into the software only business, and helped a cut-throat commodity based business to thrive at cut-throat prices. So PCs have always been cheaper than Apple; who controlled the price of hardware and software. Their higher price always made the Apple lose against the cheaper PC.

2. Microsoft has made most of their software continue to function through generations of upgrades. In fact, I have some trusty MS-DOS software that I got in 1986 that still works just great on my Windows XP computer. That's 20 years of service. Apple, on the other hand, makes software obsolete from one Operating system to another. So most people that have OS9 still, can't use hundreds of dollars of software to work on their newer OSX computer, except through a lame compatibility mode.

3. Linux sales are not driven through a company. It's free, but there is no SALESMAN. Without marketing, without a sales effort of any kind, FREE simply is not worth it if you never heard of it. Then look at Linux tech support. Some consultants are ROBBERS. A customer has no choice but to pay hundreds of dollars an hour to get it fixed.

In general, the PC and Microsoft will continue to RULE. But Mac prices have dropped a bit recently. Macs prove time and time again that they are more resistant to viruses and spyware. So Microsoft should watch out, because Apple is catching up.

In general, the market is now demanding to have less trouble. They want reliability and no-brainer service. I believe that an internet based BOX, not much different than WebTV will come along where NO MAINTENANCE is required. Data is stored on-line, software is RENTED at a reasonable price.

Right now, someone is buying a new computer every 7 years. At $700, that's 100 per year. Then they get High speed at $40 per month. Just suppose that a WebComputer were offered at just $40 per year through the cable company. Local printer and other devices would be available. The montly fee would cover the data storage costs and OFFICE software rental cost. Many would SWITCH to the NO BRAINER computer.

It's not that nobody is allowed to compete, nobody has the resources (money) to take on Micro$oft. Apple and Linux are trying but it's really a slow process. I've heard that Windows occupies about 90% of the world market. Linux is saying that more people are installing that product than ever before. I can believe it because I'm one of those people. But even if you combined the resources of Linux AND Apple, it would still fall far short of Micro$oft. And now that Vista is almost ready for general release, a whole bunch of people are going to get it just to see what it's all about. So keep thinking happy thoughts for the underdogs and maybe one day Micro$oft will have some competition.

Give it time. They're only dominant because they got in there first with the cheapest computer for the working masses.

But, the world is getting more and more technological, more people are tech savy and Windows is definately lagging with it's OS.

Apple will probably end up releasing Leopard before Vista arrives! That'll be about 5 OS upgrades for Apple while Windows has stuck with XP for about 6 years.

Anyone is allowed to compete with Microsoft.

Feel free to start your own business. No one will show up and arrest you or burn your building down or anything. But you better have a better product... or the support of the EU.
