I thought this breed was a herding/water dog. Mine is scared *#$** of water. I am just curious what others experiences have been.

LOL! Who told you that???

They are bred for hunting wild hogs. As such they are a very serious working dog, tending to be an extremely 'hard' breed that needs a very firm hand. They can really be a handful for your average pet owner and generally are happier if they have a job. I hate it that this breed is being sold as a family pet.

How old is yours? Glad it sounds like it is going well!

The Louisiana Catahoula leopard dog is not from Australia, it is from Louisiana!

And the dog probably did not have a chemical imbalance, he probably was just to much dog for you. They generally do not make great pets for most people. They are very serious and very 'hard'.

I have a Catahoula Lepoard dog as well and she goes nuts in the water, chasing ducks. A friend of mine breeds these dogs and some of his climb trees to get squirrels. I know my dog can climb trees but she wont do it in front of me. When I researched the Catahoulas on the Internet I found that they came off like a fearless Herding dog that wont take no s**t from anything but all my experiences and my friend who breeds them have been that they are fairly timid to certain things. Mine wont go near stairs. You couldn't get her to go down stairs if you had a juicy steak waiting for her. A couple of my Friends dogs are scared of the leaves in the fall! So I really don't know what to think about the Catahoulas except for I absolutely love them! The quirky fears add great personality to the dog. I hope I have helped you a little bit.

We adopted a Catahoula Leopard Dog six months ago. She's been blind since birth so would be of no use either herding or hunting....but I can't imagine her being frightened of anything.

She's intelligent and non-aggressive, tho' certainly not timid. She's game for anything and learned our house and our routines within days of joining the family.

I've done some research into Catahoulas and have never heard a connection to water. I know they're hunting and herding dogs. They're active and assertive..."hard" dogs. They need a strong influence (alpha) to follow.

Good luck!

I used to have one and he was sooo cute, he did not like the water either but he had eye problems (which i have heard that they tend to have sometimes) and he also had a chemical embalance in his brain, and he also would bite people! The vet said that we could medicate him for $25 a day. But that sure would be costly, so we ended up humanly euthanizing him...it was best for everyone.

Yes, they are a herding dog..think they originated in Australia. I don't think they are very common. Do a search on the internet for breeders in your area.
