Everywhere I turn I see more and more people dogging the USMC and other branches of the military. I was in the USMC from 1999-2004 and I am very proud to say I sever our country and served in Iraq. Why is it that we don't get any respect anymore

I also served and am grateful for the people like you that I served with. Some people look at the military as an organization for the stupid and dumb, but don't realize that some of the greatest minds in the world served their country.

For the person above that questioned why they got out....maybe you should ask yourself why you won't serve? I would rather have a flag on my coffin than not have one....because they are the ones that give you your freedoms you have today.

Thank you for your service to our country!

I'm considering joining the USMC. I have several family members who served in the Marine Corps and I have a lot of respect for them and all the men and women who serve our country.

Thank you again.

But, may I say that those people who choose to dis the military are doing so with the freedom that makes our country great. If all citizens maintained the same beliefs, that would indicate fascism. I am thankful of the Americans who exercise their freedom of speech because it is a sign of a free country. If you don't use it, you'll loose it. If American citizens do not exercise their freedoms it will make it all the more easier for these freedoms to dissapear.

Our freedom of speech does not limit what is being said, that's why it's free! If you love our country you should respect those who use the freedoms that make our country great.

People's opinions are partly shaped by what they see in the media (TV shows, news, movies, etc). Historically, the media portrayed the US military in a positive way - focusing on successes and profiling leaders. Today, however, the media seems to have an agenda and focuses on the failures. We hear every day about insurgent attacks and US military casualties, but very little about success (Al Zarqai's death disappeared from the front page pretty fast), and nothing at all about our leaders - most Americans don't even know who the US commander in Iraq is, and that is definitely the media's fault. Without hearing about our leaders, people don't have heros to respect. And hearing a negative message day in and day out starts to change opinions - it's the old story "hear the same lie enough times and you believe it." The military needs some positive press for a change.

And thank you for your service!!

Unfortunately, I very much fear that the war in Iraq is heading towards the same response returning vets received during the Viet Nam "police action". People see that our efforts are not attaining the desired results; that of a democratic Iraq, and couple that with the actions of a few soldiers who appear to have acted without honor and you have the makings of the response you now see.

Whether deserved or not, anyone in uniform is judged by the actions of anyone else in uniform. This shouldn't surprise you, it's the same mentality this country has exhibited for generations. During WWII, it is the reason we justified sending Japanese Americans to "camps". It's the reason we are terrified of the Islamic religion when most Americans have never read the Koran or talked to a Muslim practitioner.

Added to this formula is the American tendency to not be able to hold on to the type of anger that has held the Middle East in its grip for thousands of years. This doesn't mean we aren't still angry about 911, just not as angry as we were when it happened.

Know this, as a retired AF E-7 I am very grateful for your service and am honored to count you as a brother/sister.

I would like to take this opportunity to personally thank you Sgt.
I believe the people dogging the Armed Forces of the United States of America are victims of the liberal media in this country.
I am also a proud Veteran. You have my respect, my admiration, and my thanks.
The only reason I am not a victim of the Media is because of my own experience with the military and the rubbish I saw reported by the press.
That experience made the t-shirt I am wearing contain a highly sensitive B U L L S H I T detector. And it goes off every time I watch the main stream media report on our military in Iraq.
Accounts of American valor are dismissed by the press as propaganda, yet accounts of American difficulties are heralded as objectivity.
The odd fact about the American media in this war is that It's not covering the American military! The most plugged-in nation in the world is receiving virtually no true information about what Its warriors are doing.
We get a non-stop feed of gloom and doom. We don't hear about our heros. The incredibly brave G.I.s who honorably do their duty.
The ones our grandparents would have carried on their shoulders down fifth avenue.

LIBERATORS, FREEDOM FIGHTERS, AMERICAN SOLDIERS!

Give thanks to those who defend this country - for they bear the gift of liberty and pay the price of freedom!

Thank you Sargeant for your service.

The problem is growing of atrocities the American public are seeing committed by our soldiers. The rapes of Iraqi citizens, and killings of unarmed civilians. The despicable photos of degrading muslims at Abu Girad. The inhuman treatment of prisoners at Gitmo.

I do respect soldiers of integrity, but I do not respect men who are filled with hatred and believe that war justifies criminal acts toward other humans. The Iraqi war should have ended once they caught So Damn Insane, and found no WMDs.

I have a very good friend, good man, serving as a helicopter captain somewhere in Iraq. As you know, he is a very sought after target. I am very worried about him, and hope that I will be able to see him again. He has a beautiful wife, and 5 great kids. He was re-activated last summer, and went without complaint. I do take my hat off to honorable soldiers.

I just am disheartened at the growing number of thugs in the ranks!

The only people who show no respect to our returning warriors, soldiers, sea men etc, are stupid. Regardless if the war was right or wrong, the situation needed or not, and the location home or away, the people defending or country and our way of life are to be commended and honored. As a member of the military you do not choose what you are going to protect, serve or be involved in, but what you do is give your life everday to protect the rest of us. Tell the doggin' haters to get a life and be proud of what you do, did and are!

US Army 1966-1968.

Thank you cc/Sarge. You did what was right and honorable. You will always know you contributed rather than taking.

The answerer who said that more Americans respect you and are grateful for your service than those who would like to tear you down is correct.

When one of these people who try to tear you and the Corps down has to face a "tough" decision or situation and is soiling their drawers, they'll be more than happy to get some help from a Marine.

Will you help them?

I would wager that,(after assessing the situation), the honor the Corps instilled in you will find you once again pulling the ungrateful a** out of the "line of fire".

Go Marine, and have a happy, prosperous life, with a "still" mind and heart. We Love You!

First THANK YOU for serving our country. The respect doesn't come because those that disrespect those serving just don't understand one thing. You signed up to do a job and by serving that is what you are doing your job. Those that disrepect the military should look at their own job. Plus if nobody signed up for service who would we turn to when someone attacked us?
