Of course they are and so are tongue rings. You are given only one set of permanent teeth so take care of them or someday you might no have any.

Bad, bad, and bad. They are horrible for your gums, as they are like jamming something in there that doesn't belong and leaving it. They may lead to getting cavities, because they are not bonded or cememnted to your teeth and your saliva - along with bacteria and anything you eat - can get under there and you can't brush them. Even if you do take them off to brush (gross), you wil have spent a long time with food (etc) under there starting to make cavities.
