When you injure just about any joint it will swell, just to what degree... With an ankle injury, if you didn't break it you likely tore or stretched a ligament (sprained) and torn ligaments swell a lot, especially when pressure is put on them. So, you hurt your ankle, it swells a bit, you try to stand on it, it swells more. Put some ice on it, should help the inflammation.

Because when you turn your ankle you streatch the tendons maybe even partialy rip the tendons. Blood rushed to the injured area to heal the tendons. The excess blood causes the swelling. Unfortunaletly it is a nessary part of the healing process.

Swelling occurs when your body tries to rush a lot of resources to fix the injured spot. If you ice it, that should slow the swelling down or even reduce it.
