My mom's boyfriend also gave me this really large fan, he said was an original from china, which I do sense it's authenticity, but I have no idea as to where I can place it.

I've been thinking of placing it on the wall atop my headboard but my room is more modern style, well with a few oriental stuff in it but the fan is a large accent.

But since the wood doesn't really match, it's like cherry? brown and my bedframe is that rich dark reddish brown color....so im' thinking of staining the wood on the fan to match the color, what do you think?

Well I think it has been created in more recent china because I've looked at the way the wood has been designed and it seems like the wood pieces are compositions of smaller pieces put together through the usual method of cutting them to jigsaw into each other

If it is a true original don't decrease the value of this fan by alternating the wood color.
That would be a big no-no for antiquities.
One idea would be to hang it over a doorway, upside down. pending on your door.
I have mixed modern with antiques and I loved the look. So did my friends. They asked me if I would help them decorate their homes.
Another way to use this fan would be to hang it open, side ways and create a collage of modern pictured around it. It would look abstract, thus modern.
Lastly it would make a great fireplace fixture, (That's if you have one).

Staining seems to be a good idea, but before doing so I suggest that you should get more info on the actual value of it, because if it's valuable, I think you'd better leave it like that and find another way...

Do a "fan dance" for your current love interest.

Place it in the fireplace in the summer if you have one, or on the wall above the front door, if there's room.
