Sure, I think it's okay for 16 year-olds to have a car, but it is a big financial responsibility. You'll need to be able to pay for the car, gas, insurance, maintenance and repairs. I know, I know... you've heard all this before.... but I guess I'm just recommending you examine the numbers carefully to find out exactly how much you need.
My advice is to get a good used car. It is a much better value than a new car. Yes smalll things might go wrong, but it will be a lot cheaper than making high payments on a new car.
Best case scenario-- get a car you can pay in full-- you'll be far richer than your friends in the long run if you do. Even if you have to settle for a car that is decent instead of perfect, it's better to pay it in full if you can because you'll save hundreds of dollars each month.
Worst thing to do-- lease a car. Yes, the payments are cheaper, BUT it will cost you far more in the long run. When you lease a car, you are charged for even the tiniest scratch or damage, you are charged for going "over your allotted miles, and you are even charged to "get out of" the lease when your time is up. Don't lease-- buy. :)
As for type of car, find one that has the style and features you want, but also look at gas mileage too. In my opinion, all modern production cars made within the past 10 years are very safe so as long as it''s in decent shape, you shouldn't have any real worries there.
Look around on the roads... see what appeals for you. Then, so long as you can afford it, go for it. You'll enjoy the independence and have fun owning a car.
Good luck. I hope this helps.

You should get a car when
1) You have no other way to get to work (yes, you work)
2) You can afford it
3) You can afford the insurance
4) You are responsible enough to take care of it
5) You are mature enough to drive safely and not make stupid choices.
The nicest cars are the ones you pay cash for and don't have car payments.

i think that every teen should carry the burden of paying for insurance, car payments (or at least partial), and paying for gas in the family car for at least 6 months before purchasing their own. it is a good wake up call as to what is to come and you can make sure you are ready for the burden. mazda 6 is diffently a hot ride.

I believe you should get a car when you can drive it with confidence. I would suggest looking at VW and Honda's, they have nice designs and are a quality car... Good luck
