Erections are caused by bloodflow to the erectile tissue in the penis. It has nothing to do with being "turned on" or anything similar for infants. It's simply a rush of bloodflow to the area.

If you're changing him and he gets cold, the body compensates by expanding blood vessels.

If he's been kicking his legs a lot, that can cause it too.

When we sleep, bloodflow generally is diverted to the skin/extremities/body surface anyway, as the internal organs and muscles aren't working hard. This conserves heat as well. This is what causes "morning wood" in all boys/men, and since babies sleep a lot, this happens to them too.

My son got erections from the time he was born...It is just natural in boys...My 4 yr old asked me, "mami, why is my penis always strong in the morning' I just tell him, because, son, you're a boy and your body does that!! (and will continue to do it for the rest of your life!!)
