my ex-hubby was manic depressive. His case was a bit severe, however the only way to get stable was to do medication for him. However it had to be consistant and he also had to talk to a psychiatrist regularly. The hard part was the first seeing what worked...then once you did sticking with it. He never stuck with it and still to this day has problems. I have met others who have the same issue and found ways to make life better for themselves. Some found little jobs that they can get into that feeds some of the manic portion, but is free to step away when the depression occurs. There are support groups too. However if that person does not want to be stable and loves the chaos then they won't change.

Manic depression (also known as Bipolar) almost always requires medication. Therapy may be of help as well. Your doctor or clinic can refer you to a psychiatrist, who can prescribe medicine, and get you some counselling. If insurance or money is an issue, every city has a free or sliding scale mental health center. If you can't find one, go to the emergency room, and they will set you up (and take care of your immediate problem).

When I realize that I'm becoming depressed, I force myself into a manic mood... even tell myself jokes if necessary... I also start concentrating on some other subject than what has depressed me. It's worked for me for 67 years. You just have to be aware of your modes and react accordingly.

you need to get on a course of drugs - it often takes some doing to find the right drug and dose, but it can help alot.
If you are really bi-polar, the depressive side can be a very dangerous time. Suicide in bi-polar people not on meds is very high.
My ex wife is bi-polar and she gets both violent and suicidal when she stops taking her meds.

You take medicine, and you will get stable when your Dr. finds the right dosage of medicine for you.
