because before there was modern speech, the only method of communication was that of body language. So, to tell each other you were tired, you would yawn. Now, it is in our nature to yawn when we see someone else yawn, just like in the early days of humanity when a clan would yawn to tell each other they were tired. Just one of the things we've kept all these years.
