You will have to wait till he or she molts at six months. Though if its older then six months its very easy to tell male from female. Now the male has a yellow face and orange big dots of his cheeks and if a girl the face is all grey with yellow dots on the cheeks. Basically, if the colors are very bright, it is likely make. Dull colors indicate a female. Both the cock and the hen have yellow facial feathers: the female has a yellow wash around the beak and eye, in the male, yellow covers most of the head and the fore part of the crest. Females wll exhibit nesting behavior. Male cockatiels are very protective and nurturing of their offspring and are known to be very capable of raising their newborns if the mother is unable to. Also, males are usually much more vocal and can pick up more words than females.

LOL: adding this later, Yahoo Answers astericked out the word cock! I meant a male bird.

A male cockatiel has brightly coloured features, mainly the heads. The head will be a bright yellow to white even with bright orange or red "cheeks". Femals are more bland on the facial markings.. Usually their heads will be no brighter to slightly brighter than their body.. the cheeks will still be orange in hue, but not that brilliant. Also male cockatoos are generally better speakers than females. Their vocabulary is much bigger than the females and they tend to pick up words much quicker. I had a female cockatiel that no matter what we did could not get out more than a rough "Wolf whistle" where as my male could say about 10-15 different words and a few whistles.

If they are over 6 months old and have molted, the females of most colors will have bars, or stripes, on the underside of the tail and wings, and the males will be solid. Pearls and albinos are difficult to tell. A simple DNA test (one drop of blood from a toenail) is inexpensive and easy for your bird vet to do. :) Common grey tiels males head very yellow, female dull yellow. Males do tend to chirp more and bang their beaks on things.

Whistle. Normally male Cockatiel will tend to be more noisy and he is more likely to whistle compared to female. Cockatiel from my observation some type of whistle or call will only produce by a male Cockatiel. This is very obvious during breeding season.

The average person can't just by looking at them. You need to have a blood test done to see which chromosones they carry to be certain.
