One of my family members died from smoking, it's really sad. I don't think people should start smoking in the first place.

A nicotine addiction is one of the hardest addictions to overcome.

.Smoking is an addiction.....Nicotine.
Addicts are not really rational people. Rarely do they think of the long term affects on their health. They are primarily interested in the short term "fix".
One must not be too hard on these people, though. The Governments are really the blame(State and Federal) for the constant flux of new addicts.
They know that tobacco is a narcotic. They also know the long term affects on the smoking population. Still, they allow the substance to be sold to these potential addicts.

You go figure!

When people in my age group (baby boom generation) started smoking, no one knew there was anything wrong with it. You could smoke at work, in restaurants, in the doctor's waiting room, even in your hospital room. Many of us got hooked - some were able to quit - others were not.

People who started smoking recently, however, do know all the facts about tobacco and nicotine - and that they are addicting. They should not start.

Agreed, but a lot of people get addicted to the stuff and find it hard to quit. Junk food is the same way...we all know how unhealthy most of it is, but it's cheap and tastes good, so it stays in demand.

Really sorry to hear about your loss, though. That sucks..esp when it could have been prevented :(

Most people start out when they are young just trying to be cool. Then they get addicted and can't stop. Unless you've ever smoked, you will never understand how hard it is to stop.

they start at a young age when it makes them look cool and grown up I have no room to talk however I smoke cigars only because of the taste and smell. but cigars are not addictive as cigarettes cause of the chemicals in cigarettes.

It's an addiction. Most people are really young when they start and don't realize the consequences. I thought "Hey, I can quit whenever I want." Ten years later, I'm still doing it even though I know it is killing me.

Why do people do anything that is bad for them? Drink, smoke, eat the wrong food, speed, run red lights.. because we are all human and weak.

Yeah my brother smokes alot... And it makes no sense to me either. My father used to smoke as well but he quit and you think my bro would learn. I think it is mainly just a habit that they don't want to quit.

Because smoking is pleasurable. Breathing car exhaust is bad, and more peope die in cars than from smoking, but we still drive cars.
