Years ago, if I were entering an elevator for instance, and there were people involved in a conversation for whom English was not their native tongue, they would nevertheless switch to English when I entered out of respect for me perhaps as a member of the host country and when I left, and only after I left, switch back to their native tongue. Nowadays, if I go to the counter at a store in a heavily ethnic part of town, I am likely to be addressed in their native language rather than English. When did this change? When did it stop being polite and/or when did people stop caring? The question isn't rhetorical, I really am curious... it seemed like I woke up one day and it was different.

I think it's not a question of days, but of a much longer period. I'm from another country, other than Britain or the US, but I can understand what you were talking about, because in my country we have ethnic groups which are even protected by the government and given special facilities, in their native tongue. For instance, if I travel to the center of my country in certain areas, people don't even know the official language, let alone speak it in public places. I think it's a trend which is spreading rapidly, to protect communities and conserve their ethnic background all of that, sadly, at the expense of native people who feel invaded.

Its called progress. People jsut assume english was the official language here. People jsut assume this was a european race of people. In reality this is an alien nation. People should speak waheteevr language they want, but english should be learned since its the most popular language and most spoklen language. but i dunno why it annoys people when ppl speak spanish in betweent hemsleves. if u got to spain and u speak english shouldnt u have da rite to speak english to ur family and friends even if evrybody esle speaks spanish.

The only problem I have seen is the rude Mexicans-the others are more polite. And yes it is them behaving badly

Many are still polite--some have no manners and try to excuse their bad behavior with nonsense

change is constant..... stagnation is not...
whether or not people like it.... immigration is slowly but surely changing the complexion and dynamics of america..... and soon this country will become less eurocentric and we will be speaking more than one language.....
